Recap questions from "The Village" on Saturday June 13th

Written by admin on June 21st, 2009

Movies on June 13th were another great experience with the movie “The Village” a crazy blend of modern and “old fashioned” with plenty of interesting complexity as it applies to communities with deeply held beliefs keeping the important things without going crazy in in-group obsessions.

Here are the questions were expertly drawn up and posed by William and Ana

  • Who is/are the main character(s)?
  • Is the purpose of community primarily to shield us from harm/corruption? How far should they go?
  • What is the effect of the black boxes on community? Is it helpful? Or no?
  • What role does color play in how communities are formed? What role should it play? Is there safety in segregation?
  • How does Noah’s sacrifice permit or ensure the community’s survival?
  • How self-sufficient should a community be? When should we go outside our community? When should we help other communities?
  • What is the significance in terms of how communities form of the security director’s command not to “get into conversation?” What happens when we do?

Next Movie will be in July as we bid our cordial Hosts- Juice and Angel– Adieu and Godspeed.

Into the Wild: Discussion Guide

Written by admin on May 10th, 2009

Movie and Theme:

Into the Wild: American Classic journey-tale

Pre- Questions:

“Do you ever desire seclusion? What are its advantages? Its dangers?”

Post- Questions:

Is seclusion a necessity to realize our need for community?
ex: Jesus in the desert, Alex in the wild.

In the scene with Mr. Frans, would you be scared to venture up the mountain? Would you (or do we) stop halfway? Why?

What does the moose represent?

What are the “rivers” in our lives that keep us separated from others?

How can we cross those “rivers”?

Take Home #1: Going back to to the Mr. Fran’s question, in the coming month, think of a way you can ‘give community your all’ and not stop halfway.

Take Home #2: Alex reads a quote from a book that reminds him of his need for others and inspires him to return to society “… I think I know what is needed for happiness…the possibility of being useful to PEOPLE…what more could the heart of a man desire?”

What is a way you can (re)-enter into community?

Into the Wild — Out beyond the alienation, out beyond the ties that bind

Written by admin on April 13th, 2009
  • Ever journey to the “poor” side of the planet and hang out with adults who sort trash or kids who live in moldy, muddy plank shacks, and then be welcomed home with a great steak dinner?
  • Ever spend time helping folks with basic survival nutrition and then go to the toothpaste aisle at Walmart and try to figure out which of the 20 different perky flavors of toothpaste to buy?
  • Ever spend a week camping at an oceanside national park with the sun so bright, the waves so loud, the world so “alive” that leaving the blue brightness and returning “home” seemed like walking into a dim shadowland?

This Saturday, April 18th at 7:30 pm is our next community movie, a movie telling a story about someone with similar drives. Someone trying to find being and balance….

As usual we have a pre-question:  “Do you ever desire seclusion? What are its advantages? Its dangers?”  Bring your thoughts and let’s talk.

Email and RSVP to join our conversation.  Parking instructions and meal logistics happen via email.

Location: Hollywood FL

Time: 6:30 pm supper, 7:30 pm Movie.  Discussion afterwards.

Because it’s a long movie everything will start pretty much on time.

Lars and the Real Girl: Discussion guide

Written by admin on March 15th, 2009

Keeping with our open source tradition if you missed the community experience- which was excellent: food, laughter, very serious discussion– here is the discussion guide.

Episode #2:

Venue and Day:

Mar 14th -- 8:00 PM, Hollywood FL

Logistics: rice & beans at apt., movie, then crepe desserts

Movie and Theme:

Lars and the Real Girl: Americana, set somewhere in the northern midwest

Pre- Question:

What kinds of things only get healed in/through community?

Post- Questions:

What happened that permitted this community to ‘rally’ around Lars?

Could this sort of community happen in an urban metroplex such as ours? What would it take?

The pastor, the church lady, and the psychologist/MD: How did they show aspects of God’s grace?

What would Jesus do (WWJD), when faced with the Bianca & Lars situation?

What role does Bianca play in the movie? What does she permit Lars to do in his community?

Do you know people with Biancas in their lives? (or maybe you have a Bianca in your life) What can you do as part of a community to contribute towards a healing process?

Take Home:

Take Home 1: Where are you called to extend grace in community in an effort towards healing this next month?

Take Home 2: What character in the movie has qualities that you would like to try to emulate in the coming month? What are those qualities?

Take Home 3: How can we actively express love and acceptance as a community this next month?

Italian for Beginners A Discussion Guide

Written by admin on February 1st, 2009

In case you missed the screening, here’s the question guide we used for our discussion.

Episode #1:

Venue and Day:

Jan 31st– 8:00 PM, Hollywood FL

Logistics: Pizza

Movie and Theme:

Italian for Beginners, Danish with subtitles

Pre- Questions:

What is the most interesting class or hobby group you have ever participated in? What made it extraordinary?

Post- Questions:

How is the Italian class different than a group of friends who would get together on occasion at a Pub? Are the differences significant?

Communal Goals (speaking Italian and going to Italy) may be the overlapping of many individual dreams/objectives, how does a communal goal arise?

How did the inter-group bonds strengthen, what are the fibers that wove this community together ?

Clergy Person’s role– the Parson: When was he most effective? How was he effective?

Honest Friendships: Example of Jurgen Mortensen sharing with the Pastor about his “sport injury”, do you have folks (or a community) that you can trust with that kind of conversation? If so what about the friend or friendship makes that possible? And if not what would it take?

Inheritance: How did the trip to Italy redeem the inheritance left to the sisters?

Take Home 1: What are we “beginners” at and want to learn more with a community of others?

Take Home 2: What does the Maserati represent? What community objective would you sell your Maserati for?

Take Home #3: What one or two things can you do this month that will link you to this or another community?

Mennohaus Movie and Community Collaborative

Written by admin on January 26th, 2009

Sure Movies can entertain, mirror, explore, and expand .

But just as importantly they give people who feel uncomfortable or at a loss in a group something to talk about,
In pseudo metaphysics “the shared experience of watching others’ narratives can change one’s own reality”.

Hence

Mennohaus Movie and Community Collaborative: An occasional meeting of people who want to watch movies, both “in community” and with “the subject focus of community”– understanding it and building it.  All the movies will relate to this concept and each viewing will conclude with a discussion and a “take home” community assignment.

The organizing team: Flavio and Beth, Justin and Angel, would like to invite you for a chance to watch a movie and engage in significant conversation.

Some Details:

Location: Alternating, first meeting will be at Justin and Angel’s condo, just off Young Circle in Hollywood (junction of Hollywood Blvd with Federal Highway)

Day and Time:

  • Saturday January 31st.
  • Arrive between 6:30 and 7:00 for pizza either in the street or on the roof (bring $3-$4 to chip in)
  • 8:00 the movie, Italian for Beginners will be shown in the “Screening room”
  • Discussion, take home, and snacks following

Mennohaus–Family Edition

Written by admin on December 30th, 2008

“Mennohaus”– what’s that?
Mennohaus: an occasional tradition of great friends, tasty food, significant conversation, periodic beans & rice collaboratives, and now… perhaps…maybe–

intergenerational learning.

“menno” is short for Mennonite and is Flavio’s brand of faith background, “haus”– is “house” in German, neither Flavio nor Beth speak German.
“Family edition”–To start us off on the “family edition” we’re looking for people of all ages connecting around multi-age group games and songs you may have grown up with in the backcountry of S. America or Africa or Asia…or the US.

So, you say, thanks for the explanation, but what does all this mean?

Arriving this Friday January 2nd to Beth & Flavio’s at around 6:30.  No need to be exact, but since there will be some with early bedtimes we want to get going on the early side. On the other hand, if you and yours will arrive on the later side, give us a call on the way over for an update; we plan on having plenty of food!

Bringing
1) an idea (one per family needed) for a multi-age group game or activity (for example: musical chairs, charades, a rollicking fun song with gestures)
2) Soup bowls for you and yours (silverware, napkins, and simple drinks provided)

Eating
Menu: Vegetarian Harvest Stew– seasoned beans, squash, corn etc and toasty bread.  If this doesn’t work for someone in your family…bring something with you that they will eat. We won’t be offended.

Thinking
We hope you and yours find this to be a neat experience around food & fellowship, a loosely crafted ‘family edition’ experience with a shared faith and desire to connect at its core.  Perhaps the first of many…

Doing
Come wanting to talk, laugh, listen, and be silly.
The gathered group may end up using everybody’s activities, or not, just depends.

Let us know if you’ll try and be here,

See you then!
Flavio and Beth
